Beaches

Numerous beautiful beaches with soft sand or colored pebbles are found in the prefecture of Chania in western Crete.

Many Chania beaches are among the best on the island, such as Balos, Falassarna, and Elafonissi. Apart from organized beaches in Chania Greece, there are also plenty of deserted coves and lovely bays to enjoy total privacy.

All Chania beaches though have crystal waters and look like paradise. You will find below a list of the best beaches in Chania Crete.

Excursions

Samaria National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the White Mountains of Crete, draws tens of thousands of visitors per year to hike the spectacular gorge at its center. While it's not the only gorge in the area, Samaria Gorge is by far the biggest—in fact, it's Europe's second-largest canyon overall.

The 10-mile trail starts at the top of the gorge, taking visitors past towering cliffs, sweeping views, and uniquely Cretan flora and fauna, eventually ending at the Libyan Sea in the town of Agia Roumeli. At its narrowest (and most dramatic) point, known as "the Gates," the gorge is only 13 feet wide—and nearly a thousand feet high.

Sightseeing

Seeping in history, mystery, and with a strong connection to Greek mythology, the ancient Knossos Palace is an enigmatic archaeological site located about 20 minutes south of modern-day Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete. Knossos Palace dates back to 1900 BC and is believed to have been the ceremonial and political centre of the Minoan civilization. Knossos is also considered by some to have been the first city in Europe.

Knossos Palace is heavily associated with the Greek myth of the Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull creature imprisoned in a labyrinth commissioned by King Minos and built by famed architect Daedalus. The palace is also connected to the story of Daedalus and Icarus.

Evidence suggests the area surrounding Knossos Palace was first settled by humans in the Neolithic period around 7000 BC. The palace itself was constructed in 1900 BC and mysteriously destroyed around 1380-1100 BC. The ruins were left abandoned until being discovered, excavated, and restored in the early 20th century by a team led by British archaeologist Arthur Evans.

Nightlife in Chania

Get lost in this ancient city’s winding lanes and find a fusion of Venetian, Egyptian, and Ottoman influence.

If you want to discover Chania at night, then there is no better option than strolling around the old town. Walk the picturesque narrow alleys and soak in the vibe of this historical place 15 min. driving from Effi Apartments. While you enjoy yourself and admire the views, feel free to find the perfect gift for your beloved ones back home. There are plenty of souvenir stores available in the area.

If walking around the old town is not enough for you, then the port and the lighthouse are just next door, no more than 5 minutes walk. And this place carries as much history as the old town. Venetians built that harbor in the 14th century to protect Chania from pirate raids and external enemies.

In a matter of a few years, this harbor became one of the most important economic centers of the Venetian Republic. The glory left behind is still evident all around. Elements of the Ottoman and Cretan culture are also visible, intermixed with Venetian architecture.

All in all, the ambiance is magnificent and the atmosphere majestic, as if it comes from another era. The modern bars and restaurants are the only reminder that we are in the 21st century.
